OCR upgrades the interface between man and machine in various application areas like postal automation, data entry, bank automation, etc. The main goal of this thesis was to develop an offline handwritten Gurumukhi word recognition system for postal automation. Gurumukhi is the script employed to write the Punjabi language which is the official language of Punjab state of India and is generally spoken in the northern regions of India.
